Setting User Time Zone

Site Task: Edit User Location Settings


User location settings may be edited by site administrators as well as directly by users.

Click to open/close each step for further details and instructions:

  • Navigate to Site administration ► Users ► Accounts ► Browse list of users
  • Click the Edit icon to the right of a user's name.
  • Scroll to the location information near the bottom of the General section.
    • City/town: User's city can be typed in to text field
    • Country: Select user's country from drop down menu
    • Timezone: If a "Forced timezone" was selected at the site level, it will display here. If users are allowed to select their own time zone, a drop down menu will appear here, with the default value of "Server's local time." Select PHP time zone appropriate to user's location.

Note: In the user profile context "Server's local time" refers to the Default timezone set in Site Administration Location Location settings, not to the time zone of the operating system of the actual server on which the site is housed.

  • Click Save changes to commit any changes that you have made to the server

  • Navigate to User menu ► Profile ► Edit profile
  • Scroll to the location information near the bottom of the General section.
    • City/town: User's city can be typed in to text field
    • Country: Select user's country from drop down menu
    • Timezone: If a "Forced timezone" was selected at the site level, it will display here. If users are allowed to select their own time zone, a drop down menu will appear here, with the default value of "Server's local time." Select PHP time zone appropriate to user's location.

  • Click Save changes to commit any changes that you have made to the server

Have the location settings been updated?


Use the following steps to ensure that location settings have been updated correctly.

  • Navigate to Site administration ► Users ► Accounts ► Browse list of users
  • Click the Edit icon to the right of the user's name.
  • Scroll to the location information near the bottom of the General section.
  • Check that the following fields reflect the changes you recently made:
    • City/town: User's city appears in the text field
    • Country: User's country appears in the box
    • Timezone: User's Regional/City code is displayed in the box
